News Flash: You Need A Script!

Like every other movie geek in the world, I saw the Oscars last night. And like most cynics in the world, I expected Avatar to dominate the awards. I'm talking a Return of the King-style sweep here - Best Director, Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Effects, Best Makeup, Best Score - the whole nine yards. I have never been so happy to be wrong in my entire life.

I will not blog in-depth about the Oscars, seeing as 1) I don't have a lot of time atm, and 2) There's really not much to say. The Internet can tell you all you need to know. I will just provide you with a (brief) opinion.

TEN BEST MOMENTS OF THE OSCARS (in the humble opinion of BeatnikBelle):

1. KATHRYN BIGELOW WON BEST DIRECTOR. This is just epic on so many levels...I was SURE they would give this one to James Cameron or Quentin Tarantino. But last night, history was made: A woman won Best Director. I was sitting there, literally praying for her to win. I was thinking, "Please, God, let her win...I need to know that I have a chance of standing up there someday." (Don't judge me; I'm a female filmmaker, damn it.) And then when she won, I am pretty sure that I made the most noise. Michael Jackson, sorry if I woke YOU up. (Wake the dead? Get it? Anyone? Meh, moving on.)

2. Ben Stiller dressed in full Avatar gear...dude, that was just made of win...epic win...later, my fellow Stiller-haters and I joked that it was the only role in which we truly loved Ben Stiller, and he wasn't even acting. The fact that he said, "This seemed like a better idea in rehearsal" made my night...that is, until Kathryn Bigelow won Best Director.

^Seriously, try NOT to laugh at that.

3. The flashy opening number...I don't know why, but that just appealed to me so much...Neil Patrick Harris makes me smile.
4. The fact that Avatar won only the awards that I personally think it deserved: Best Art Direction, Best Visual Effects, and Best Cinematography...and the fact that it was not even nominated for Best Screenplay.
Before I go on, I have to explain here that I did not hate Avatar. I saw it bootleg, so maybe I missed something, but honestly, I loved the visuals and hated the screenplay. Sigourney Weaver was the highlight of the cast, the music was comparably okay, and the cinematography blew me away. I repeat: Avatar deserved the awards it won. But in my opinion, it did not deserve Best Picture because the screenplay sucked and the casting was okay but not brilliant. So no, I am not hating on Avatar, but I am very glad that it did not win Best Picture.
5. The fact that Up won Best Animated Feature. Pete Docter deserved that award, straight-up. I just wish that the whole animation team could've been onstage with him as well, but I'm not sure the Oscar stage is big enough for that. ;) Up also won Best Original Score, which made me extremely happy.
6. I'll admit that Sandra Bullock was not my first choice for Best Actress in a Leading Role. I really wanted Meryl Streep to win that award. But hearing Sandra's acceptance speech brought tears to my eyes, so I have to say...Epic win, Ms. Bullock. Epic win.
7. Steve Martin hosting the awards with Alec Baldwin...do I need to say any more?
8. I am such a girl, I swear...but I loved seeing all the pretty dresses. Cameron Diaz's and Kristen Stewart's being my favorites. However, Sarah Jessica Parker made me want to puke. (Not that that's anything new, but still.)
9. While I am disappointed that Miracle Fish did not win Best Live-Action Short, I am happy that it was at least nominated.
10. Finally, this is just so cheesy that I KNOW people will laugh...but to be honest, at this point I'm just looking for the rat's ass I could give. Michael Jackson was included in the memorial montage. I'm sorry, but I have to have a geek moment here and say that I am SO FREAKING HAPPY about his inclusion that I almost cried. On the flip side, they didn't include Bea Arthur. Not cool, Oscar People. Not cool.
So, yeah. While it was a pain in the you-know-what to get up this morning, and it was a bigger pain in the you-know-what to get dressed and ready (people dress up to watch the Oscars here...yeah, I didn't get that either), I am very glad that I went last night.
And hey, in another decade or so, it might just be me up there... -crosses fingers and goes to finish adv. screenplay assignment-
